Burning hard bop here but with a lot of tenderness too in a first time release of a Roy Hargrove rarity from the 1990s held until now privately in the Jazz at Lincoln Center archives. A live performance from the New York space this five-piece suite was one sadly trumpet icon Hargrove who passed away far too soon never returned to. Hargrove was only 23 when this was recorded and it's a fine band he gathers around him given that saxophonists Ron Blake and Jesse Davis, trombonist Andre Hayward (excellent on 'Into the Outcome'), pianist Marc Cary, bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Greg Hutchinson are on board. A treat - and what a perfect way to remember Hargrove by this digging in the vaults.
