A real gem this heralding The Octet Broadcasts that the Gearbox label is releasing next month.

By British composer and saxophonist Alan Wakeman the recordings go back to 1969 and 1979 and were originally made for BBC radio and for extra kicks they are getting a first time release on vinyl, CD and digital.

Period detail includes introductions from broadcasters Brian Priestley (who turns 80 tomorrow) and Charles Fox.

Wakeman is with Alan Skidmore, Mike Osborne, Paul Rutherford, Paul Nieman, John Taylor, Lindsay Cooper and Paul Lytton on the early recording and with Skid again on the 1979 session plus Art Themen, Henry Lowther, Paul Rutherford, Gordon Beck, Chris Lawrence and Nigel Morris. What we have so far, even by itself, is a complete treat.
