Compositionally strong Devotion is achieved by an unusual combination of vibes, sax and bass and there's a weight that Berlin-based Norwegian vibist Karl Ivar Refseth provides harnessing the melodic to journey into deeper territory. The trio seem to have found a space all of their own. Certainly it's a world away from swinging vibes and yet isn't remotely avant-garde or at all clinical although some pieces come close but more a progressive journey from start to finish steered by the quality of the musicianship and the interest ingeniously retained by Christian Weidner on alto saxophone with Matthias Pichler on double bass completing the line-up. Worth discovering.
