Jimmy Heath died in January however he left behind his work on Love Letter just released by Verve. Featuring guest spots by Gregory Porter who does O.C. Smith proud on Gordon Parks' 'Don't Misunderstand,' Cécile McLorin Salvant and Wynton Marsalis the all-ballads album includes songs written by Billie Holiday, Mal Waldron, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Dorham, and Gordon Parks. It's lush, for the ages classic jazz that you don't get to hear much of any more and I guess a whole new generation of listeners wil be rediscovering Heath's work all over again through the impetus of this classy release. Heath was 93 when he passed and over the decades performed on more than 100 albums and wrote more than a hundred compositions, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by artists that include Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, James Moody, Milt Jackson and Ahmad Jamal.

Very nice to see Norwegian singer Solveig Slettahjell back with a new album next month. Come In From The Rain out on the ACT label has a vintage flavour to it, something the singer does very well, I suppose chiming nicely in a Madeleine Peyroux type style.

On the record Solveig is with pianist Andreas Ulvo, bassist Trygve Waldemar Fiske and drummer Pål Hausken, and the songs are: Come In From The Rain (Melissa Manchester & Carole Bayer Sager); On The Street Where You Live (Frederick Loewe/Alan Jay Lerner); You’re Driving Me Crazy (Walter Donaldson); Since I Fell For You (Buddy Johnson); So I Borrow Your Smile (Solveig Slettahjell); How Deep Is The Ocean (Irving Berlin); Now Or Never (Curtis Reginald Lewis/Billie Holiday); I Lost My Sugar In Salt Lake City (Leon René/Johnny Lange); Johnsburg, Illinois (Tom Waits); Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk, Cootie Williams & Bernard Hanighen).

I Lost My Sugar In Salt Lake City from the album is streaming.
