The pulsating 'Giants' from Empirical's upcoming EP Like Lambs is streaming marking the first new music from Empirical in some three years. One of the UK's most acclaimed jazz acts in recent years three of the pieces on the EP are by the band's drummer Shaney Forbes who says: '‘In my music, I’m exploring how melodies, rhythms and group interplay play a part in creating a kind of landscape of feelings. And I hope it will provoke an emotional reaction in the listener’'. Like Lambs is out in June.

Track of the day is the absorbing title track of Ways of Disappearing to be issued next month by the Sunnyside label, a solo piano record from the acclaimed US-based Romanian pianist Lucian Ban which was co-produced by Mat Maneri. Recorded in Transylvania a year ago the album includes originals and standards by Annette Peacock and Carla Bley. Ban says: “I have always felt closer to a line of jazz pianists that I see as radical, people like Ellington, Monk, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Andrew Hill and a few others who challenged the ways piano can be played both in a group or solo setting … for me they pushed the language beyond its defined borders.”
