Absorbing thinking here from New York based Japanese composer and conductor Miho Hazama with her long running band - Hazama has conducted the Danish Radio Big Band and Marius Neset in the past. A 13-strong ensemble with strings, reeds and brass in the instrumentation, personnel includes trumpeter Jonathan Powell and alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson. Bass icon Christian McBride and Blue Note alto saxophone star Immanuel Wilkins guest, with Wilkins stealing the show on 'From Life Comes Beauty'. Far from orthodox in the approach there is a lot of delicacy on display but the ensemble has robust power at its fingertips too with the 'Exoplanet Suite' at the heart of the writing.

Crunching grooves, massive riffs, exploring the faultline where jazz can pivot into prog and back again, the keys trio Rymden return with their latest studio album and Bugge Wesseltoft, Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund do not disappoint on 'The Mountain' streaming now ahead of the full release of Valleys and Mountains on Friday. The tune written by drummer Öström is strong both on melody and rhythm with a discernible bittersweet quality to it. Rymden play Ronnie Scott's on Saturday.
