Mike Miller known for his work with Chick Corea and Boz Scaggs among others is a master guitarist, a gutsy fusioneer if you like and on Trust he takes you back perhaps to the 1980s and a time when big complex electric jazz themes were more the order of the day. The material is excellent and the level of soloing expert. The company the American keeps is formidable on the record with Jimmy Haslip, Gary Novak, Airto, Scott Kinsey, Chad Wackerman and Walt Fowler just some of the stellar names. 'Twankle' is the outrageous standout and the track featuring Airto, 'Mr Moreira', is also a highlight. The ''otherness'' of jazz is kept alive by players like Mike Miller away from the fickle nature of momentary fads and for craft, extravagant technique and a certain unorthodox spirit Trust steeped in a kind of American pastoral is a welcome alternative to what we are tediously fed by media pushing more throwaway fodder. What goes around… comes around let's hope anyway.

Does what it says on the tin you might think on the opening track of this trio album from pianist Joy Ellis, a dreamy, expansive, soundworld opening up. That feeling of decompression continues on the next track as drummer Adam Osmianski adds subtle shade and Ellis continues in a quiet reflective vein. The pianist leader goes for a strong melodic theme on 'Eat, Sleep, Repeat' and you feel the different strands of the album starting to come together on this track, the deft bass of Henrik Jensen starting to be more obvious and later he begins 'Silver Linings' for a different point of entry. Gentle and thoughtful on this showing Ellis is a pianist worth getting to know. It's an album to chill out to rather than dance around the living room to!

Out on Bandcamp. Joy Ellis, above, plays the Vortex, London on 24 March
