Ellis Marsalis, jazz pianist, and father of six sons including Wynton, Delfeayo, Jason and Branford, has died aged 85. The Mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, has paid tribute on social media: "Ellis Marsalis was a legend. He was the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz. The love and the prayers of all of our people go out to his family, and to all of those whose lives he touched."

Simply beautiful. The rest is conversation, just listen to this in all its grandeur. Once the final note resounds, and the afternote, interrupted, disappears, the applause premature and in blushing consternation uncertain at first then convinced of itself, by the very end melting away entirely, think about how your day has just got that much better because of the serendipity engendered in the discovery, the felicity, of choosing to listen to 'In and Out' and what you have just obtained from the experience entering your own fugue state of altered consciousness.

Your ears will not have deceived you but you will surely want to play this treatment of a Martial Solal composition that Solal and Johnny Griffin recorded together released 20 years ago, again and again.

Look for the full album, Solal and Liebman back together again not in Bordeaux on this occasion, instead, two months later, Paris. To be issued by Sunnyside, on 24 April.
