UK saxist Nye Banfield is inspired by Wayne Shorter, Ambrose Akinmusire and UK legend Mark Lockheart among others. Trails and Traces full of originals of Banfield's has established players Mark Kavuma on trumpet, Rupert Cox on piano & keys, effective on Rhodes in the intro to 'Pocket Tissue Blues', and Hamish Nockles-Moore on bass with Wilf Diamond on trombone and Ewan Moore on drums. The main track is the long 'Characters' at the end. Banfield manages to make what could be a retro sound more meaningful to the jazz of today than most and it will be interesting to follow his career as it develops in the coming years.

Cloudward doesn't disappoint and if anything further clarifies the American's approach compositionally with lean, expressive guitar lines and daring modernistically inclined band explorations of the material. This Nonesuch release has 8 new compositions by Halvorson appearing with her sextet Amaryllis - that's Halvorson, Patricia Brennan (vibes), Nick Dunston (bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Jacob Garchik (trombone), and Adam O’Farrill (trumpet). Laurie Anderson guests on album track 'Incarnadine'. Out today
