I was hooked pretty much straight away by this eloquent new studio release from US guitarist Pete McCann. It injects plenty of melodicism into tunes that make sense and has plenty of interplay across the band. Without Question includes tributes to John Abercrombie and Lee Konitz and you get a sense of post-1970s jazz fanning out from the centre to explore the increasingly absorbing outer edges an improvisation can discover logically arrived at. The band McCann has gathered around him includes fine altoist Steve Wilson, the driving pianist Henry Hey, bassist Matt Pavolka and drummer Mark Ferber with compositions all by McCann. It really is a pleasure - I was reluctant to switch Without Question off. SG
