Not often these days I come across a Randy Brecker album. Well the good news is the great trumpeter, who turns 75 later this year, teams up with saxophonist Eric Marienthal for Double Dealin' which is to be released in September by Shanachie. It's flying jazz-funk and amounts to Brecker and Marienthal's first recording together as co-leaders, while the album is packed full of star players with keyboardist George Whitty, drummer Dave Weckl and bassist John Patitucci also on the record.

We need something a little different, don't you think, to lift us out of our current malaise and pandemic predicament? When you listen to the flute of Elena Pinderhughes on top of the warp speed fastness of Billy Childs' piano on 'Dori' and then catch the vocal interjections interspersed as the track progresses from the thrown together 'choir' you know you've landed in that space you perhaps have been searching for all along. Acceptance has been unveiling its treasure over the last few weeks and this latest track, a hat tip to Return to Forever for the 21st century maybe, raises the bar higher. Eric Harland on drums contributes a lot, and there is a deftness throughout that is let's face it in the wider world impossible to achieve. Uplifting: or what? To be released on Mack Avenue.
