Organ-soaked jazz is everywhere now in modern mainstream currents. That is not new and actually a positive presence. The twist is when a sax enters the fray. (Or even a sax and trumpet in tandem.)

The ultimate in the past few years is the Joey De Francesco sound for instance as demonstrated on 2018's You're Driving Me Crazy with Van Morrison or sans vocals the James Carter method channelling Django live in Newport.

However, a big range of players are doing excellent things under the radar and finding their own sweet way including the tasteful Brian Charette here on a Farnell Newton-led romper from the trumpeter's Rippin' & Runnin' out this week.

Brandon Wright's tenor saxophone solo is composition in the moment on 'Holding Still,' after the head and the fluently Hubbardian Newton gem of a solo, through his involving improvisation.

The Frisellian drummer Rudy Royston is excellent here tapping into a style that Rod Youngs provided so well in a similar vein with O'Hig and Luft in the UK last year on their Monk and Trane triumph. Posi-tone are putting Rippin' and Runnin' out on Friday. SG
