Thumbscrew have managed, a little like the codebreakers in the second world war, to crack the seemingly uncrackable. They locate what makes Anthony Braxton tick here with this by turns punky thrash and serene contemplation of the more obscure work of the master. In the process of celebrating his 75th birthday they take on previously unrecorded pieces by Braxton from the vaults and you'd be surprised what they find, a stubbornly swinging treat on 'Composition No 79' for instance; or the gravity defying momentum achieved on 'Composition No 52' and that's just for starters. The stripped back trio [Tomas Fujiwara - drums and vibraphone; Mary Halvorson - guitar; Michael Formanek - double bass] open up the material and let it breathe in exhilarating fashion.
