A trio heaven sent here for fans of acoustic sax, bass, drums set-ups with the first sighting of the RGB Trio who immediately escort you into their own absorbing hard bop-tinged universe. With top Irish drum and bass team of Kevin Brady and Dave Redmond joined by scorching Irish based US sax player Meilana Gillard the material is made up of appealing band originals and the sound owes something to a touch of Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins to its outer coating. There's plenty of room for extensive improvisation around the sturdy no-nonsense themes and some fine musicianship sprinkled throughout. The RGB are also touring soon - with dates in Belfast (21 September) Armagh (22 Sept), Derry (23 Sept) Kildare (11 November) and London (18 Nov). All in all as impeccable a jazz trio to come out of the Irish scene in a long while. Out on 20 September. Check out the band's Bandcamp page here
