Saturday morning listen
Fresh and invigorating 'Ochre' an original song is drawn from Extinction out in late-September on the Jazz Re:Freshed label, new from singer-songwriter Sofia Grant whose powerful, flexible voice draws to mind Laufey a little but more soulful, the song opening up into more of a community sound studded with syncopated clapping and a back and forth between lead and backing vocals. Grant, a Cambridge University educated Londoner who has English and Swedish roots is among the Jazz Re:Fest stellar new generation line-up also featuring Steam Down and Theon Cross next week at London's Roundhouse.
Personnel on the track include drummer Lya Reis Guerrero, percussionist Ernesto Marichales and bass guitarist Alley Lloyd. Extinction tracks include Grant originals and a version of Rare Silk's tremendous close harmony ManTran-esque rarity that put words to the melody of Stanley Turrentine's 'Storm,' a piece that goes back to the saxophonist's 1970s CTI album, Salt Song.
