The W manage the knack of balancing vocals and deep instrumental passages without one element overpowering the other. Bruno Heinen's pianism is one dazzling pillar of the record and the other is the powerful singer Heidi Vogel whose wordless improvisations add an incisive and winningly mysterious sense of attack to the overall sound. With bassist Andrea di Biase and drum star Gene Calderazzo completing the band there is a solid bedrock at the core of it all. A slim EP: you just want to hear more. Clearly one of the best UK jazz releases of the year to date.
