Quite an old fashioned sound. And yet Tipping Point is modern and progressive in a John Dankworth sense especially in terms of the arranging. And for sure this album to be released in April in that regard has a very British sound in keeping with such a comparison.

The Tom Green Septet's latest is full of original composition on what is a climate change-referencing affair.

Cerebral and yet not obscurantist tuning in and out of bebop and more to the point an orchestrated cascade of matching sounds that unspools tantalisingly especially on standout ballad 'Between Now And Never' it's five years since Skyline when the septet flickered first on our radar.

The line-up is slightly different with Tommy Andrews on alto saxophone instead of Matthew Herd however the approach shares an affinity with the earlier album although if there is a change the Gil Evans-like flavour I detected before is entirely absent. However, that abiding chamber dimension and a certain intellectualism that does not banish warmth and a certain optimistic swagger remains. One for the buffs. Trombonist Green is a force to be reckoned with. SG

Dates coming up include Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho, London on (21 April).
