Bit of a thrill this punky thrash around the more obscure work of Anthony Braxton with 'Composition 61' leading off The Anthony Braxton Project to be released next month. The work of Thumbscrew who are celebrating Anthony Braxton's 75th birthday, with previously unrecorded pieces by Braxton from the vaults. A trio [Tomas Fujiwara - drums and vibraphone; Mary Halvorson - guitar; Michael Formanek - double bass] Halvorson says: “We chose pieces that captured our imagination and that we thought would work well for the instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drums or vibraphone.'' Bassist Eva Kruse, best known for her work with Michael Wollny, and joined by among others Wollny drummer Eric Schaefer, has an interesting new album New Legend out this summer.

Released by the Swedish Prophone label Kruse, who studied acoustic bass and improvisation at the university of arts n Berlin with Sigi Busch, Jerry Granelli and David Friedman and later in Sweden with Anders Jormin and during her time with German youth-jazzorchester BuJazzO took classes with the much missed pianist John Taylor who proved a big inspiration to the German player.

Completing the record line-up are Tjadina Wake-Walker, Uwe Steinmetz, and Christian Jormin. Listen to the title track, with its Delius-like opening, above.
