From the upcoming Omer Avital Qantar New York Paradox release, a quintet album that Zamzama/Jazz&People are putting out in April.

A bustling heritage hard bop record on which drummer Ofri Nehemya shows formidable power and bassist leader Avital familiar from last year's tremendous Yes! trio: Groove du Jour with Ali Jackson and Aaron Goldberg once again shows his ideas and flair.

The track we've chosen from the album is named for 17th century Jewish Yemenite poet Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. Avital says he ''grew up on his poems and songs. It is also a name of a nice street/area in the south part of Tel-Aviv.''

Interesting that Dexter Gordon double album The Squirrel makes it to vinyl at last for a special Record Store Day release next month.

A Danish radio live recording made while the Gordon quartet were in Copenhagen to play the Jazzhus Montmartre in 1967 the album first had a CD release in the late-1990s.

A mega long 20-minute+ version of Gordon original 'Cheese Cake' accompanies the Tadd Dameron title track while also on the record are the standard 'You've Changed' and Sonny Rollins favourite 'Sonnymoon for Two.'

Gordon appears on the record with his fellow Americans Kenny Drew and Art Taylor (on piano and drums respectively) with Danish bassist Bo Stief completing the line-up.

On Rhino, look for ''The Squirrel'' on 18 April.
