The clanging thought of Michael Gove dancing (as if) to the northern lights of old Aberdeen recently is exorcised completely with the return of the city's jazz festival. Fergus McCreadie, Corto.Alto and Seonaid Aitken are among the line-up at the festival on from Thursday 30 September. Pianist McCreadie, whose trio album Cairn explores a lilting very Scottish sense of frankly very unGovian ecstasy delivered with a devastating sense of flow and one of the best albums of 2021, appears with singer Irini Arabatzi. Alto saxophone great Paul Towndrow, whose bagpipetastic Deepening the River also lights up the year, also makes it up to the granite city. Fergus McCreadie, top. Photo: Edition

Wood Green spot Karamel has a sparkling programme coming up. Pop down if in the N22 locale especially on Thursdays. This week it's Ellingtonia and more. The great film session drummer Paul Clarvis also known for his work with Mose Allison, Pigfoot, The Rich Tailors, Babelfish and famously the percussionist on Harrison Birtwistle's 'Panic' that sparked tabloid fury in the 1990s when the avant-garde classical piece was played at the last night of the Proms, is in the room as drummer with The Prima Donnas. Next Thursday it's KeitaBeat who are guitarist Francesco Lo Castro, keyboardist Claudio Corona and drummer Cosimo Keita Cadore. The brilliant Noah Stoneman (known for his work in Xhosa Cole's Unity band) is in on the 23rd. On the 30th check out the Emily Roberts Sextet who play Brecker Brothers and Sco-influenced originals in the mix. Roberts is seriously poised and in the zone as you can hear above. Can't wait? Before her Wood Green show she is in Gary Crosby's band at Ronnie Scott's on Wednesday.
