Solo saxophone albums are a difficult feat to pull off. That's not stopping Darius Jones who certainly has grasped the essence of the art going on his version of an unreleased Georgia Anne Muldrow piece included on his upcoming Northern Spy label release Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation)

The Muldrow piece 'Figure no. 2' is streaming. On it the altoist imbues the very pared-down theme with a momentous sense of stillness and a raw aching quality that speaks volumes. The album was recorded live during a Portland, Oregon performance two years ago months before the pandemic and at the end of a tour. It features work besides Muldrow by Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, and Roscoe Mitchell's dazzling 'Nonaah'. Look for Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation) in November

Is it at all possible to stand out as a piano jazz trio playing in a fairly conventional modern-mainstream jazz style? It is. But it's difficult. There's a lot to like on 'Give Up' a riff-based track that has a loose feel eventually. This accessible piece from This is Not About You by Johan Lindvall, Adrian Myhr and Andreas Skår Winther contains a tumblingly effective bass undertow and is easy to admire. But not necessarily is it so easy to wholescale buy into. I'll be tuning in again nonetheless when the full album is out. There is a spark that may well still ignite. Let's see.
