If you recall Xhosa Cole's Unity band just a few years ago the organ player in that incredible Larry Young homage was a young unknown called Noah Stoneman. We caught Xhosa's band live just before Lockdown - read that review here.

And what a prospect we knew he was then. Upping the ante still further and playing piano this time around three years on he is at last making his debut with Anyone's Quiet: Let It Rain To You on the Barcelona label Fresh Sound New Talent. Two powerful tracks from it: the serene balladic 'Major' (above) …

… and the driving 'Mourndoom' are streaming.

North Londoner Stoneman also featured on Alex Hitchcock's fine Dream Band on the same label issued a couple of years ago.

Still in his early twenties Stoneman has been studying at the Royal Academy of Music and this recording is produced by significant jazz alumnus of the Academy Kit Downes most recently reviewed playing pipe organ on the extraordinary Medna Roso. Details are sketchy about the summertime release so far although what we do know is that Anyone's Quiet: Let It Rain To You was recorded in a London studio and has Stoneman playing his own originals joined by double bassist Will Sach and drummer Luca Caruso who was excellent on the Banger Factory's Warriors last year. The album is out on 14 July.

Bit of an event release in prospect clearly - jump up to speed & bustle along to hear Stoneman in the flesh at Dalston spot the Vortex on 11 July. Noah Stoneman photo: press

There's a completely infectious rhythmic surge here and listen further and emerging in a reborn manner you'll be aware of the very familiar traditional New Orleans 'Iko Iko' motif. Sometimes known as 'Jock a Mo' it has been interpreted down the years by among many Dixie Cups, Warren Zevon, Dr John - even Ringo Starr. Just one small detail of this remarkable drum-heavy latest single and original composition deep cultural explorations of Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah's formerly Christian Scott. 'Xodokan Iko - Hu Na Ney' is from the New Orleans trumpeter composer innovator, chieftain of the Xodokan Nation of the maroon tribes of New Orleans and who also makes use of his own ''Chief's Bow'' on the album and rousingly introduces the late-July issuing of Bark Out Thunder Roar Out Lightning.
