Early-2022 sees the release of a new Charles Mingus-themed album from the US avant double bassist John Hébert who is well-known for his work in the trio of pianist Fred Hersch who indeed reciprocates to join Hébert within the quintet on Sounds of Love. Cult altoist Tim Berne is among the ensemble on the recording which is a live affair recorded in the Swiss city of Lugano in 2013 and which is to be released by the New York indie label Sunnyside. What is streaming so far is a stimulating Hébert piece 'Frivolocity' that was inspired, according to Sunnyside, by the bass line of Mingus piece 'Sue's Changes' first heard on 1975 Atlantic album Changes One. The overall effect of the new piece is radically different (you'd need to be a Sherlock-of-all-Sherlocks of a bass detective to clock this without being told) and includes strong soloing from trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum plus very stimulating interaction between Bynum and Hersch. The group is completed by drummer Ches Smith. Release date is 14 January.

Already winners of the MOBO best jazz act prize back in 2013 with their original line-up Sons of Kemet win this year at the awards held in Coventry with their current line-up, that is with Theon Cross and Eddie Hick who joined founders Shabaka Hutchings and Tom Skinner, in the band following the departure of Seb Rochford and Oren Marshall some years ago. Shabaka and Theon participated on Saturday night in Tomorrow's Warriors' celebratory A Great Day in London concert (pictured on stage during that concert above) on the South Bank. Latest from Sons of Kemet this year was their Impulse album Black to the Future released in May on which they were joined by guests who included 1990s UK sax icon Steve Williamson, multi-instrumentalist Angel Bat Dawid, MC D Double E and poet Moor Mother.
