Hearing 'Formation' played live by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra at Kings Place on Tuesday night during a Joe Harriott-themed concert it was striking how the classic sounds of Harriott remain vibrant and relevant interpreted by a current generation of top jazz musicians. A previously unreleased recording released as an EP by the Jazz in Britain label has just surfaced recorded in London on 24 August 1961. Tracks include 'Formation' with 'Coda,' 'Shepherd's Serenade,' 'Calypso Sketches' and 'Compound (drum solo)' also on Formation: Live '61. Playing mainly pieces included on Free Form (released in 1961) and Abstract (1963), the line-up on the recording is on alto saxophone Harriott, with (more unusually) trumpeter/flugelhornist Les Condon, pianist Pat Smythe, double bassist Coleridge Goode and drummer Phil Seamen completing the quintet.
