Known usually as an out and out free improviser nonetheless there is a more melodic side of James Brandon Lewis in evidence on Molecular that seems quite a departure for the supremely talented US saxophonist.

To be released in October on the Swiss Intakt label, Lewis here is with drummer Chad Taylor, pianist Aruán Ortiz, and bassist Brad Jones. The lead-off title-track occupies a strong David Murray-like space built on strong building blocks as Lewis goes inside and outside to touch on both classic traditions and move to explore more innovative departure points. Check out the track ahead of release. It is something of a game-changer, long term Lewis watchers will surely agree.
