It's the USA's top jazz honour becoming an NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) Jazz Master and thus has global significance given the worldwide renown of many US jazz musicians from any number of generations. For 2024 the new Masters just announced are trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, saxophonist and composer Gary Bartz, pianist-singer-organist-composer Amina Claudine Myers and jazz writer and broadcaster Willard Jenkins whose book Ain't Book a Few Of Us we reviewed last year. A ceremony celebrating the new NEA Jazz Masters will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in April next year. Amina Claudine Myers, photo: publicity shot

Looking to sheer feel today: Here's a hip cover of Willie Dixon's 'The Seventh Son' done vocal anyway towards the dimensions Mo Allison measured up. The Keltner groove makes all the difference, yep the session drum deity that is Jim Keltner (George Harrison, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Ry Cooder J. J. Cale) provides the pervasive feel underneath the almost J. J. Cale feel and edge to the Americana flavours ushered in via the tasty guitar riffery (big up Johnny Lee Schell). Glam showman crooner Matt Von Roderick smears trumpet and is rampant all over the track when not singing. It's a Gil Goldstein arrangement in the musical midwifery - icon Gil is on keys. From Celestial Heart out on 21 July.

  • Step back in time and be good to yourselves once again by digging Keltner so infectious on 'Money Talks' that set the hare running bit time on Cale's #8 (1983).
