Acclaimed French jazz icon fingerstyle and gypsy jazz swing guitarist Sylvain Luc has died at the age of 58. Luc emerged from the French Basque country in the 1990s to make a mark on the national and international scenes with solo guitar album, Piaia. He went on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in French jazz including Richard Galliano, Michel Portal and Stéphane Belmondo. Luc also formed Trio Sud with André Ceccarrelli and Jean-Marc Jafet. Radio France has broadcast a tribute. Luc's playing credits included work with Wynton Marsalis, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham and Richard Bona.

Luc won the 2010 SACEM Jazz Musician of the Year award in France. Inspired by Brazilian music, Django Reinhardt and modern jazz Luc also performed alongside Michel Legrand during the late great film composer's 50th anniversary concert.
