Here's the tremendous vibes-punctuated 'Night Shift,' our track of the day, drawn from Amaryllis a new six-song suite from guitarist Mary Halvorson with among the players Halvorson, Patricia Brennan (vibraphone), Nick Dunston (bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Jacob Garchik (trombone), and Adam O’Farrill (trumpet) augmented on some album songs by the Mivos string quartet. Signing to Nonesuch Records Halvorson kicks off her tenure on the label with another album for release at the same time in May. It is titled Belladonna, a set of five compositions written for Halvorson on guitar plus the Mivos Quartet and marks Halvorson’s first time writing for a string quartet.

The ability to improvise over the Internet in real time and in good quality sound enabled by technology such as JackTrip is beginning to change still more the whole process of recording. Cath Roberts here has become one of the best known free improvising new generation players in recent years on the UK scene and easily establishes a convincing rapport playing baritone sax with fine bassist Olie Brice. Just three tracks, quite conversational in nature, Roberts reminds me of Ken Vandermark a little here but nowhere near as full-on while Brice allows a lot of room for her to improvise and has a bluesy Henry Grimes-like feeling to his approach.
