Pretty stunning for a number of reasons including the arrangement (for instance trombone under saxophone beautfully blended early on) but above all the complete interest generated by the composition throughout and the way sectional interplay seems so organic and natural. The Michael Arbenz piano solo line three quarters of the way through is also a thing of beauty dipping in and out of the ensemble. As many readers will know tenor saxophonist Stan Sulzmann is one of the UK's most influential saxophonists spanning generations (significant for instance early on in the career of the Methenyian Gwilym Simcock). Here Sulzmann joins forces with the brilliant Swiss Vein Trio and helms his own Mon Ami Ensemble in the integrating of both. 'Mon Ami,' ''my friend,'' is the name of Sulzmann's piece and title track. A charity fundraiser for a really good cause, Médecins Sans Frontières, released on Friday other pieces on the album Sulzmann explains are: '''Chu Chu' (originating from my trio Neon), 'Between Moons' (a commission from composer John Taylor from my 65th Birthday tour), and 'Shadow Painting' from my 70th tour in 2019 plus three new pieces; 'Love for Sale' (the Cole Porter classic) blended with 'Resolution' (John Coltrane) into one long arrangement […] then an arrangement of 'One Day I'll Fly Away' ( Joe Sample & Will Jennings from The Crusaders)''. 'Mon Ami' itself Sulzmann says is a new piece. Stan Sulzmann, top. Photo via Bandcamp
